Practical Magic 2 is releasing worldwide today, but its early reviews on X went viral ahead of its release. The first film was a box-office flop but developed a cult following over the years, paving the way for this sequel. The film is expected to finally dethrone Spider-Man: Brand New Day from #1 in the domestic rankings this weekend. But ahead of that, let’s take a look at what the critics online are saying about this Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock starrer fantasy film.
Susanne Bier directed it, and the OG movie came out in 1998. Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Dianne Wiest, and Stockard Channing reprise their roles from the first movie, with a dynamic new supporting cast including Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, and Xolo Maridueña.

The early reviews for Practical Magic 2 is all over the internet and it is quite mixed. A Nicole Kidman fan who is also a critic, Adam Patla wrote, “Much like its predecessor, #PracticalMagic2 is messy fun. Kidman and Bullock don’t miss a beat jumping back into the Owens sisters’ shoes (Kidman in particular is having a blast). Lee Pace is born to be a romantic leads. Lacking in depth for the new generation of characters and some story elements, as well as the visual dynamism of the original. I did find it to be emotionally satisfying, though!”

Another critic, Mark, added, “This movie was so fun and full of heart! If you loved the original, you’ll enjoy this. Finally, a legacy sequel that doesn’t just rely on nostalgia/references to its predecessor.”

Rotten Tomatoes certified critic Doug Jamieson said, “#PracticalMagic2 is longer than it needs to be and the plot is a bit muddled, but the effortless chemistry of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman makes it worth your while. Joey King is a solid addition and Lee Pace brings smouldering charm. A warm and nostalgic good time.”
Pop culture enthusiast Anthony Jenkins added, “While it’s wonderful to see Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman back in their iconic witchy roles, #PracticalMagic2 is a dull and lukewarm legacy sequel that lacks the wicked charm of the ’90s cult classic. With an unfocused story, recycled elements from its predecessor and underdeveloped characters, this nearly 30-years-later sequel is unfortunately dead weight. It may have had good intentions, but unfortunately, the magic just isn’t there.”
Critic Matt Rodgers added, “#PracticalMagic2 is as all over the apothecary as the first film, but it does have bundles of heart, especially during the opening gambit. However, it descends into a bloated Fantastic Beasts style romp that is waaaaaaay too long. Kidman is a hoot, though.”

What is the film about?
The film follows a multigenerational family of witches cursed to live without love for centuries, as they confront dark family secrets and make sacrifices for one another in a desperate attempt to break the spell.
