Lionsgate CEO John Feltheimer has announced on Friday that fourth and fifth instalment of the Keanu Reeves starrer action film franchise, John Wick, will be developed and shot consecutively next year. The decision was taken during the company’s earnings call on Thursday.
As reported by Deadline, John Wick 4 is currently scheduled to go on floors on May 27, 2022, and the company is busy preparing scripts for two instalments of the franchise. The film’s production was delayed earlier this year due to Hollywood’s ongoing production issues. No other details about the fifth instalment of the action film franchise were revealed during the earnings call. Both films will be shot back to back when Keanu Reeves becomes available. However, this is not the first time that the actor has shot consecutively. He shot Matrix: Reloaded and Matrix: Revolutions back to back from March 2001 to August 2002.
Reportedly, John Wick has become a big action franchise for Lionsgate as all three instalments of the franchise has enjoyed considerable box office success and have received widespread acclaim from critics. All three instalments starring Keanu Reeves have grossed $584 million at the box office.
Keanu Reeves’s role of a legendary assassin who squares off against criminals and a mysterious cabal of hitmen in all three instalments has thrilled fans so much so that Lionsgate is creating a John Wick spin-off with Starz as a television prequel titled “The Continental”. The TV series is gearing up to premiere sometime following the fourth instalment of the franchise. The title Continental derives its name from the assassin-friendly hotel that is a prominent part of each film.
The company is also planning to produce another movie called Ballerina as part of the planned expansion of the John Wick franchise about a younger assassin. Reportedly, the film is being helmed by Underworld director Len Wiseman.
Currently, Keanu Reeves is shooting Matrix 4 for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow in Berlin, Germany and he is also set to star in “Bill & Ted Face the Music”.
