Several filmmakers have come out blasting Warner Bros decision of making a simultaneous theatrical and OTT release of all their films of 2021 on HBO Max. Recently, Christopher Nolan slammed the studio like never before and now, Dune director Denis Villeneuve has joined the bandwagon.
Speaking to Variety, Denis explained that cinema is the only medium which can give you a unique viewing experience. He says that the decision has hijacked one of the major studios of Hollywood. He also adds that such a deal is an insult of filmmakers who have invested their blood and sweat to make their project for a big-screen experience.
Denis Villeneuve said, “I learned in the news that Warner Bros. has decided to release “Dune” on HBO Max at the same time as our theatrical release, using prominent images from our movie to promote their streaming service. With this decision, AT&T has hijacked one of the most respectable and important studios in film history. There is absolutely no love for cinema, nor for the audience here. It is all about the survival of a telecom mammoth, one that is currently bearing an astronomical debt of more than $150 billion.”
