The Umbrella Academy 2: Did You Know? Makers Wanted To Add Miley Cyrus’ Song BUT They Couldn’t, Here’s Why!

The second season of The Umbrella Academy was released on July 31 on Netflix and it has become one of the most binge-watched series on Netflix. One of the unique aspects of the web series is its music. The showrunner Steve Blackman uses songs specifically written into the script to tell the story. According to reports, Blackman wanted to include Miley Cyrus’ cover of Jolene in one of season 2’s episodes however, it seems his wish didn’t see the light of the day.

The Umbrella Academy soundtrack includes several memorable songs which serve in setting the scenes and plot device. Some of the compilation of the songs include Phantom of the Opera Medley”, Prince’s “1999”, Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now. Blackman uses songs to set the choreography of the scene. The rhythm and pace of the song also set the mood of the scene. Steve Blackman and other show creators’ selection of the song greatly depends on the cost of the songs, while the cost of songs to be used in movies and TV shows highly depends on the age of the song, popularity, length of the song to be featured and the artist.

Since they write the music into the scripts the process can prove to be problematic for the writers. When a piece of music that the writers wanted to use is just too expensive and cannot be included in the budget, writers often have to rewrite the scene with a different tone and pace based on the new song that has been chosen. Songs by bands like The Beatles can be expensive, whereas songs by lesser-known bands can be inexpensive for the producers.

Steve Blackman at the CTAM 2020 Press Tour wanted to include the Cyrus cover of Dolly Parton’s Jolene in an episode. However, the producers of the web-series couldn’t afford the cost of the song, they had to drop it. But Blackman claimed that they mostly got what they wanted.
