WWE is the monopoly of the pro-wrestling industry and has developed a huge loyal fan base over the years. The company saw high points during the Attitude Era led by icons like Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and Ruthless Aggression Era led by stars like John Cena and others. But over the years, despite witnessing growth commercially, the industry has failed to saw a rise of a legend like the aforementioned names.
Yes, we have some tremendous athletes like Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton and others but we don’t get to see a cult figure, the people would go crazy for. Addressing the same issue, superstar John Cena got into a candid talk during a podcast episode of After The Bell hosted by Corey Graves. He spoke on several topics right from the lack of a real star to the presence of good talent in the company.
He said, “It needs what I’m not sure it can produce…it needs a frontman, or woman. And that’s what will be able to define what the era is because it takes on those personality traits of its top star. The crowd is so mixed, that if the company puts its faith behind an individual, the knee jerk reaction of the audience, even if they liked the guy last week, is to say ‘fuck you, you’re not gonna tell me who I like’. So the audience is also tipping the scales of this not being able to happen. Universal popularity will never happen because someone will see it and get onto it and be like, he seems to be getting popular, let’s stop this right now. Or she seems to be getting popular, let’s change this right now. And I’ve seen it happen with guys who are really darlings of that underground crew, make it, and then as soon as they make it, the rug is pulled out from underneath.”
“When I say ‘oh there’s no one person at the front’, that’s also not bad. I think the business is reaching farther than ever…I think we’re fine with a segmented group of performers – Roman, Seth, Braun, Sheamus, New Day, the SmackDown roster, the Raw roster, the NXT roster. You don’t have one person you go to see. If you go to an NXT show, you go to see eight or nine people. You go to a Raw, you go to see eight or nine people,” he adds further.
Meanwhile, John Cena will be seen going one on one against ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt at Wrestlemania 36, in a Firefly Fun House match.
