First things first, let us give the talks of 250-300-350 crore or more that are coming in for Kabali some rest. With no reliable data available, there would always be a debate around what eventually transpired at the Box Office. Yes, the fact remains that down South, Kabali has done well and made money for all involved. That’s good news and reason to celebrate for Rajinikanth, his producers and his fans, especially after Kochadaiiyaan and Lingaa. Fair enough!
Let’s come to the business it has done up North (including Hindi as well as Tamil and Telugu screening). There, the collections are a modest 28 crore. These are just about decent since the film hasn’t performed as per the potential, but then it hasn’t been a washout either, something which is the case with practically all dubbed South releases (barring something like Baahubali, the collections of which would be followed only by its sequel now). Considering the fact that Rajinikanth is the most known celebrity from South in pan-India, and there was good hype being generated about its release, the film could have done better.
Still, the fact that the man in his 60s still has clout good enough to attract at least 28 crore worth of tickets just on ‘apne dam tak’, one can well imagine the ‘dhamaka’ which is round the corner next year once Rajinikant appears on screen with Akshay Kumar. Considering the fact that Robot 2 is the sequel to much loved Robot (which was a decent hit in Hindi), the decent run of Kabali has done to reaffirm that if Rajinikanth comes in a truly package product, there is a definite audience waiting for him.
