Mohenjo Daro is currently struggling at the Box Office. If the start was poor on Friday, the collections by the end of the day [8.87 crore] were ordinary too. There was absolutely no leverage for the film to lap to it because it faced challenge from three quarters: a) the core content that is not finding connect with large section of audience, b) lack of critical acclaim that was so much needed for a film of this genre and style and c) competition from another biggie like Rustom which was the last thing that the film would have wanted at this point in time.

The only silver lining, even if one can call it one, is the fact that the film has a larger number of screens. However, even that hasn’t helped the film gain much as Saturday collections too were just 9.5 crore*. This is just not happening for a film which, as per trade estimates, has cost over 100 crore. Even if the film has recovered over 60% of the costs (as per the buzz going around), the film needs over 80 crore theatrically just to break even.

As of now, with just 18.37 crore* in its kitty, it is just impossible for the Ashutosh Gowariker film to gain such kind of moolah. Things are just not working out for the Hrithik Roshan starrer and after Kites and Guzaarish, this is yet another big ticket film which has proven to be a no-show for the star.

The irony lies in the fact that Hrithik has done really well as an actor for the film and given it all. Moreover, Ashutosh Gowariker too has demonstrated that he wants to play a different game with each of his films instead of just going with the routine. However, the end result unfortunately not seen audience’s nod of approval.

*Estimates. Final numbers awaited

Note: All collections as per production and distribution sources
