Holi has been a time that has not been very favorable at the box office. While there have been superstar releases on the festival, the box office figures and stats have never painted a decent picture. In fact, stalwarts like Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn have also delivered disasters during the Holi weekend.

However, this year might be a little different since Ajay Devgn‘s Shaitaan is still working well at the box office and is expected to churn out great numbers in the extended Holi weekend.

On the other hand, Kunal Kemmu’s Madgaon Express is also working fairly, and Randeep Hooda’s Swatantrya Veer Savarkar is picking up pace over the holidays. However, in the last 13 years, Holi has not been a celebratory event at the box office for Bollywood films. In fact, out of 13 releases, only 3 passed the litmus tests and were hit at the box office.

Biggest Opening

The biggest Holi opener at the box office is Akshay Kumar’s Kesari, which opened at 21.06 crore. The film, which was a war drama, did not perform as expected but still passed the test. Next in line was Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 3, released in 2020, which opened at 17.50 crore! Third in line was Varun and Alia’s Badrinath Ki Dulhania, which earned 12.25 crore on day 1.

Biggest Disaster

There have been many flops, but the biggest superstar disaster on Holi was Akshay Kumar‘s Bachchhan Paandey, which registered a 70% flop. The film was made on a budget of reportedly 165 crore but collected only 50.25 crore at the box office. The second disaster was Ajay Devgn’s Himmatwala, which was made on a budget of 68 crore and collected 45 crore.

Highest Grosser

The highest Holi grosser to date is Akshay Kumar’s Kesari, which collected 153 crore at the box office. This is followed by Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’s 146 crore. Shaitaan might be running in the theaters and has already collected 124 crore, but it will not be counted as a Holi release since there are films this year that have been released after Shaitaan’s release. So the third highest Holi grosser is Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt’s Badrinath Ki Dulhania with 116.60 crore. Interestingly, these are the only films that crossed the 100-crore mark during Holi.

The Exceptional Holi

It was in 2011 that there were no Holi releases. In fact, there were no releases in March, and the only films that were showing in the theaters were Kangana Ranaut and R Madhavan’s Tanu Weds Manu. It was released on February 25 and entertained the audiences through Holi, which was released a month later on March 20. Helmed by Aanand L Rai, the film collected 38 crore at the box office and was a hit.
