Sony’s latest animated release, GOAT, is set to enter its eighth week in theaters. After opening to $27.2 million domestically, the film added $2.2 million over the March 27-29 weekend and collected another $0.7 million from Monday to Wednesday. This brings its cumulative domestic total to $101.5 million, surpassing the $100 million milestone by $1.5 million. Paired with its $80.4 million international haul, the sports comedy has now grossed $181.9 million worldwide.

Budget & Break-Even Point (Estimated)

With a reported production budget of $80 million, GOAT needs to earn around $200 million globally to break even, based on the 2.5x multiplier rule. This means it is still short of approximately $18.1 million left to hit that target.

While it remains to be seen whether the film can reach that box office milestone during its ongoing run, it has already surpassed the North American earnings of 1997’s Scream 2, which earned $101.4 million. For context, the latest installment, Scream 7, has already overtaken the animated film and has grossed $119.5 million so far domestically. And now, it is closing in on the domestic total of the original 1996 slasher hit Scream. Keep reading to find out how much more GOAT needs to earn to surpass it at the domestic box office.

GOAT vs. Scream – Box Office Comparison

Here’s how Sony’s latest animated release stacks up against the 1996 slasher hit, based on Box Office Mojo data:

GOAT – Box Office Summary

  • North America: $101.5 million
  • International: $80.4 million
  • Worldwide: $181.9 million

Scream – Box Office Summary

  • North America: $103 million
  • International: $70 million
  • Worldwide: $173 million

Based on the above figures, GOAT has already surpassed Scream in worldwide earnings by a decent margin. However, it still trails the iconic slasher in terms of domestic box office performance and is currently trailing by around $1.5 million.

Given its current momentum and stage in the theatrical run, GOAT is well-positioned to potentially overtake Scream’s North American total during the April 3-5 weekend. That said, the final outcome will become clearer over the next few days.

What’s the Plot Of GOAT?

Directed by Tyree Dillihay, the animated sports comedy is set in a world populated by anthropomorphic animals. The story centers on Will (voiced by Caleb McLaughlin), a young goat who dreams of becoming a professional roarball player. But in a sport ruled by bigger, faster, and more ferocious animals, Will faces a big challenge. The film follows his underdog journey as he fights to prove that heart and determination can matter just as much as size and strength.
