Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the Dune sequel released at the North American box office on Friday, with previews being held on Thursday. In the overseas market, the biggie made its arrival on Wednesday, with more international circuits getting added over Thursday and Friday. So far, the film is very much on track as per the pre-release projection and might even go higher when actuals come in.
Dune 2 at the worldwide box office
In the domestic market, Dune 2 began its journey on a flying note by amassing an impressive $12 million through Thursday previews. It closed its Friday by garnering $32.2 million (including previews). Speaking about the overseas market, the magnum opus raked in $21.6 million on Friday after bringing in $20.8 million over Wednesday and Thursday (including previews).
By the end of Friday, the overseas collection of the Dune sequel stands at $42.4 million, as per Deadline’s report. Adding domestic earnings of $32.2 million to that, the worldwide box office stands at $74.6 million.
Looking at the current pace, Dune 2 is looking to close its domestic opening weekend at $75-$85 million. In the overseas market, an impressive collection of $95-$110 million is expected to come by Sunday. So, the global weekend of $170-$195 million is on the cards.

After a grand opening weekend, the film is expected to continue with its winning momentum for a long time as word-of-mouth is extremely positive, and there’s a scope of high repeat audiences, considering the biggie is a visual spectacle. It’ll show legs in the theatrical run, and some bigger milestones are expected to be achieved.
Surpassing the lifetime of Dune ($433.79 million) looks like a cakewalk, and there’s a chance of even entering the coveted $1 billion club.
