Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi saga Dune 2 has achieved yet another milestone as it surpasses its predecessor. Timothee Chalamet is ruling the box office and showing Hollywood that he has arrived. First Wonka and then this Denis-helmed film, he is on a roll. The 2024 film not only has a fantastic cast but also a perfect storyline and visuals. It was a fantastic experience for the cinemagoers.
The film came out earlier this month and is already one of the highest-earning movies of this year. The prequel won six Oscars, and this one will undoubtedly take a few next year. The story continues from when he meets Zendaya’s character, Chani, in the first movie, and in this movie, Timothee’s character, Paul, accepts his faith and grows to be a leader. Dune 2 received excellent reviews from critics and scored above 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is doing impressively well at the box office, too. According to Variety’s report, the sequel has already surpassed Dune: Part One’s lifetime collection of $433.92 million by a decent margin.
As per the report, Dune 2 has earned $494.7 million globally, including $208 million [domestic] and $289.4 million internationally. It is expected to cross the $500 million mark today, a rare feat reached by very few films, as per the media outlet.
The film was released in the theatres on March 1, and it crossed Dune: Part One’s domestic collections of $108 million just after ten days. Dune 2 has made $36 million in China, $32.8 million in the UK, and $25 million in Germany. In France, this Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya starrer earned $24.9 million; the lowest came from Australia, $15.6 million.
Meanwhile, as per NBC News, Dune 2 crossed $100 million over the weekend from the IMAX screens alone, making it the seventh-fastest film to achieve this feat.
The Denis Villeneuve helmed magnum opus is based on Frank Herbert’s novel, and there is reportedly going to be a Dune 3 as well. Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Josh Brolin, and Javier Bardem will return to support the Lisan Al Gaib [Timothee Chalamet].
