One might ask, what is the point of listing down the most exciting Hollywood films ready to hit theatres in India over the next 12 months, till next Diwali? After all, don’t we have many full-fledged film industries, all of which, put together, make the most number of films in a year? Isn’t it also true that many of the Hollywood films released in India (and there are generally 2-4 of them every week) don’t do much at the local boxoffice?
Look at the flip side though. Gone are the days when movie lovers had to wait for weeks and months before their favourite Hollywood movie showed up at a theatre near them. Nowadays, many Hollywood flicks see a day and date release in India. Some (Johnny English Reborn, The Three Musketeers) even release in India before they are released in the US! Bollywood’s biggest stars are signing up with Hollywood – Amitabh Bachchan is doing a small but significant role in The Great Gatsby, co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Also, on at least half-a-dozen occasions this year, Hollywood releases of the week opened much better than the Bollywood releases in that week. And last but not the least, Hollywood studios (Sony, Fox, Paramount thru Viacom 18) have set up shop here for good – and besides releasing and marketing Hollywood films, they are also producing and distributing Hindi films.
So, well, here goes the list of the Hollywood films to look forward to from this Diwali to the next:
The film, which marks Steven Spielberg’s return to direction after a gap of three years, is a much awaited film globally. While it has been shot using motion capture technology, which captures the actors’ movements and translates them into computer graphics on screen, the Tintin movie is also special for another reason – it is for the first time that Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson (who helmed the successful The Lord Of The Rings series) are working together on a project. Daniel Craig, Jamie Bell, Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis and Nick Frost star in the film based on the adventures of the intrepid young reporter whose relentless pursuit of a good story thrusts him into a world of high adventure. The film will release in India on 11-11-’11 in 2D and 3D versions.
With Bollywood’s Rockstar releasing on the same day, expect some fireworks at the box-office!
Since visual effects allow Hollywood filmmakers to go back into history and retell the bloody battles of the past, Tarsem Singh decided to dip into Greek mythology and create a 300-like visual effects spectacle with Immortals. The Henry Cavill, Freida Pinto and Mickey Rourke starrer will fight it out with Tintin and Rockstar at the box-office.
Love stories work well in India. And with something like The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, the fourth film in the Twilight series, releasing all over on November 18 this year, things are going to heat up.

Probably Anonymous, based on the (often contested) theory that Shakespeare never wrote a word of what is attributed to him, is the most unlikely film to come from director-producer Roland Emmerich who has films like Independence Day, Godzilla and 2012 to his credit. 2012, by the way, was a big hit in India.
With the success of animation films like Kung Fu Panda 2 at the Indian box-office this year, things are looking up for Puss In Boots, the animation film based on the character of Puss from Shrek. The movie has an enviable voice cast of Antonio Banderas (as Puss), Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis and Billy Bob Thornton.
Tom Cruise is back with the fourth instalment of the Mission: Impossible series, a franchise which is well-known to the Indian audiences because the earlier three films have been played on television many times. Maybe, leveraging on this familiarity, the film’s India distributor, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, is planning to fly Tom Cruise down for a promotional tour.
Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and his sidekick, Dr. Watson (Jude Law), join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), in the much awaited Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows.
This film, which is about international espionage in the bleak days of the Cold War, has caught fans’ attention, right from the name itself. The cast: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, John Hurt, Toby Jones and Mark Strong. Award-winning director: Swedish Tomas Alfredson (Let The Right One In). Have one look at the trailer and you’ll know what we are talking about.
Oscar nominee Leonardo DiCaprio and Oscar winner Clint Eastwood pair up for the movie that is the drama to watch out for this year. In J. Edgar, DiCaprio essays the former American heavyweight, J. Edgar Hoover, who, during his lifetime, rose to be the most powerful man in America. As head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for nearly 50 years, he would stop at nothing to protect his country. Through eight presidents and three wars, Hoover waged battle against threats, both, real and perceived, often bending the rules to keep his countrymen safe.
Marvel Comics, which produced The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, puts all of them together in The Avengers for a superhero team-up of a lifetime. Iron Man did fine business at the Indian box-office, and The Avengers looks likely to live up to it.
Master filmmaker Martin Scorsese follows up his psychological thriller, Shutter Island, with the fantasy adventure Hugo, based on Brian Selznik’s bestselling novel. The movie stars Asa Butterfield in the title role along with a stellar supporting cast including the likes of Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Ben Kingsley. This is the first Scorsese film to be shot in 3D.
Not many might agree with The Social Network actor Andrew Garfield donning the Spider-Man suit. However, since this is a series reboot, meaning the whole story of Spider-Man will be told once again from the beginning, Garfield just might look the character of young Peter Parker.
Director Christopher Nolan (Memento, Inception, The Dark Knight) returns with The Dark Knight Rises expected to hit theatres in summer 2012. With his previous two films doing roaring business at the Indian boxoffice as well, both in the English as well as dubbed versions, you can be sure that Bollywood producers will avoid this megabudget movie at any cost when they plan their The Dark Knight Rises releases!
