Recently, it was announced that Shoojit Sircar’s quirky drama Gulabo Sitabo starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana will be having its global premiere on Amazon prime video on June 12. This sparked controversy between multiplex chain owners and the film producers. Now the director of the film, Shoojit Sircar has opened up about the multiplex owners’ controversy along with many other things.
Gulabo Sitabo is a story of hilarious banter between a tenant played by Ayushmann Khurrana, and the owner of an old haveli played by Amitabh Bachchan. The film’s script is written by Juhi Chaturvedi who has collaborated with Shoojit for the fourth time. The direct release on the OTT by skipping the theatrical release for such a big Bollywood film didn’t go down well with the multiplex chain owners.
In an interview with Firstpost, Shoojit Sircar was asked about the resentment among the multiplex chain owners of INOX and PVR over the digital release of Gulabo Sitabo? He said, “Their resentment is right, and that is why I never retaliated to what they felt. I just told them, ‘Yes, you have every right to protest. You have every right to feel uncomfortable because this film is releasing digitally. But there is nothing personal. You will find your way to run your business, and I will find a way to release my films.”
