Bollywood’s A-list actress Rani Mukerji recently appeared at the Australian Parliament to unveil the special commemorative stamp honoring her late father-in-law, the iconic filmmaker Yash Chopra. The event, which took place on August 13, was a prelude to the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2024, which also marked the 50th anniversary of Yash Raj Films. The actress spoke vividly about the importance of the event.
Several parliament members and dignitaries attended the commemorative stamp honoring ceremony, celebrating Chopra’s legacy and decades-long role in the Bollywood industry. During her speech, Rani Mukerji emphasized on the significance of the co-production treaty between the two countries, expressing optimism for more collaborative efforts in cinema.
She also highlighted the influence of Australian talent on Indian audiences, stating, “We absolutely love Baz Luhrman and his cinema and his musicals. You have Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman who we adore in India. They have stolen our hearts with their performances and their brilliance in musicals. I am really manifesting a romance between Nicole Kidman and Shah Rukh Khan and of course a Hugh Jackman and Rani Mukerji musical.”

Mukerji, who has starred in blockbuster Hindi films including Mardani, Saathiya, and Hum Tum, among others, also discussed the power of Indian cinema globally, adding, “Indian films can transport you to a magical place when the lights dim in the theatres. Indian cinema is right now at the forefront of shaping pop culture, our talent, our films, our stories are truly making a mark globally.” She continued explaining that Indian films bring lots of joy, color, and happiness to the world and the lives of people, reflecting on the increasing influence, impact, and acceptance of Indian cinema around the world.

Alongside Mukerji, IFFM director Mitu Bhowmik Lange also discussed the stamp launch’s importance, highlighting Chopra’s pivotal role as the festival’s first patron. The event also included a keynote speech by filmmaker Karan Johar. Many pictures and videos of the event also went viral on social media.
