Today is a dark day for the Indian classical music fraternity as Pandit Jasraj has left the world. Pandit Ji had turned 90 in January this year. His contributions to Indian classical music can never be forgotten.
With almost 80 years long music career, Pandit Jasraj was a recipient of various prestigious awards and honours including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.
A report in the Press Trust of India has the veteran’s daughter Durga Jasraj confirming that the legend has passed away in the US. He was living in New Jersey. The cause of his death is yet to be known.
Last year, a planet, between Mars and Jupiter, was named after Pandit Jasraj. PM Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Twitter. Modi Ji wrote, “The unfortunate demise of Pandit Jasraj Ji leaves a deep void in the Indian cultural sphere. Not only were his renditions outstanding, he also made a mark as an exceptional mentor to several other vocalists. Condolences to his family and admirers worldwide. Om Shanti.”

Singer Salim Merchant also posted, “Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj ji has left us.. his voice & music has inspired & left a deep impact on the history of Indian classical music.”
