Interview: Sushant Singh On Chaar Din Ki Chandni

After the grand success of Yamla Pagla Deewana, director Samir Karnik brings you Chaar Din Ki Chandni. We caught up with Sushant Singh who plays a prince, a serious character which will make audiences laugh. Read on to know what Sushant Singh has to say about Chaar Din Ki Chandni, his role in the film and his co-stars.

Sushant, tell us something about Chaar Din Ki Chandni.
It is a comedy. Samir Karnik (director of Chaar Din Ki Chandni) has already proved his mettle at comedy in Yamla Pagla Deewana. It is a story about Chandni, played by Kulraj (Randhawa), how she enters a royal family and changes everybody there. This family, headed by Anupam Kher, has four sons. Chandrachur (Singh) plays the eldest son. Then there is Mukul (Dev), then me, and the youngest one is Tusshar. We all play princes in the film.

How does Chandni change all of you?
That is part of plot and I cannot tell you that at this point of time.

We have heard that this film is a tribute to Sreedevi. Is it so?
I don’t know if it is a tribute. But yes, the famous song of Sreedevi, Chandni O’ meri chandni is there in the film. Also, the name of the lead actress in the film is Chandni… apart from that I don’t see any other connection.

The trailer of Chaar… seems to be identical to Yamla Pagla Deewana. Is there any similarity in the two films, especially because YPD was a hit?
No. Apart from the comedy and a few Punjabi characters there are no similarities between the two films.

Tell us about your role in Chaar Din Ki Chandni.
I was bored with my intense image in my earlier films and I wanted a break. With regards to my role in Chaar Din Ki Chandni, I am not explicitly funny in this role. It is a serious role but it somehow ends up being funny. It will make audiences laugh.

Was there any comedy on the sets while shooting?
Oh, so much. Anupam Kher and Om Puri used to pull each other’s legs all the time. It was fun all the time. In fact, one man who never sat quietly was Anupam Kher… he would make us all laugh, relax and enjoy. We would do other things as well, like playing word building games.

So, who was the master in word building?
Anupam Kher, Tusshar and me, we were good at it.

How was the experience of working with senior and reputed actors like Anupam Kher and Om Puri?
Very good; I learned so many things, both of them are so supportive and it was not like they were senior and they took the limelight. They actually carry the story forward in the film but along with all of us.

You have worked both in TV and films; what suits you more?
Initially I did television and then films; I don’t want to lock myself in just one medium. Whenever I get a good role and need more money, I do television, it is as simple as that.

I did Gulaal for a year and Virrudh for a year but after a certain point of time TV becomes tiring. It doesn’t matter how good a writer is but playing a character becomes repetitive. In TV if a protagonist is going through crisis he will keep going. For me playing one character for one year is a limit; after that I get bored.

What will be your message to the audiences? Why should they watch Chaar Din Ki Chandni?
If you loved Yamla Pagla Deewana you will love this one.
