Imran Khan‘s track record with first time directors is well known, what with a 100% success rate. However it is a totally different story when it comes to experienced directors. With Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola being directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, he would be pretty much looking at breaking the jinx.
“In numerous interviews and other conversations, Imran hasn’t minced words when talking about the fate of Luck and Kidnap which he did with Soham Shah and Sanjay Gadhvi respectively. Of course that has been in response to oft repeated queries around him choosing to work with first time directors,” says a source.
Still, the very fact that he has worked with five newcomers in a row is pretty much a testimony of the fact that he has put his faith in untried and untested directors.
“Right from Abbas Tyrewala to Shakun Batra, he has trusted fresh talent to deliver goods for him. His track record with five back to back successes, Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, I Hate Luv Storys, Break Ke Baad, Delhi Belly and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, doesn’t leave any doubts in anyone’s mind either,” the source adds.
This is the reason why many were surprised when he actually came on board for MATRU…. This development was a quick fix as well since Ajay had left the film just before it was about to go on floors and Imran pronto stepped in.
“Perhaps with Vishal he would turn third time lucky,” a filmmaker comments, “By the look of it the films looks quite whacky and there must have been something for Imran to go for it. Hope his faith in Vishal pays off.”
Meanwhile, there seems to be a new strategy in place for Imran as he is doing films with experienced directors like Milan Luthria (ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI 2) and Punit Malhotra’s next with Kareena Kapoor. That should further result in Imran riding his luck. However for now, all eyes are indeed on MATRU KI BIJLI KA MANDOLA.
