While the visual treatment of Bhushan Patel directed 1920 – Evil Returns pretty much signifies that horror would be presented in a different style on the big screen, at least as far as Bollywood outings are concerned, from the musical treatment as well as the romantic moments perspective, it is pretty much apparent that there is a strong influence of Vikram Bhatt’s style of shot taking in 1920 – Evil Returns.
“See, the core philosophy of a franchise is that audience should feel similar experience film after film. This means I shouldn’t be presenting something which is as different as chalk and cheese when compared to the first in the series. This is the reason why from the core template perspective, I didn’t deviate too much from ‘1920’ and stuck to the kind of filming which was evidenced there,” says Bhushan, a first time director.

However Bhushan refutes the charge that he has tried to ape Vikram.
“That was never the intent though,” he says, “Yes, Vikram has proved himself time and again but I haven’t tried to shoot the film exactly in the same manner as he does. I don’t think that’s a good thought either. Ultimately, the film should look like Vikram Bhatt produced/written and Bhushan Patel directed. I have ensured that while giving tweaks of my own.”

On the technical front though, Bhushan was quite confident from Day One when it came to canning the scenes.
“I was the D.O.P. of ‘Haunted’. That too was sheer coincidence since someone else was shooting for the film and when I realised that it was being done on 3D, I just visited the location to see how it was being done. Fortunately for me, I ended up shooting that film as well. Moreover, I had started my career with Pravin uncle (Vikram’s father) and hence it was time for some reunion. I ended up being the first person to operate a 3D camera. That film also marked my first taste of horror shoot ever,” smiles Bhushan.
With Aftab Shivdasani and Tia Bajpai in the lead, 1920 – Evil Returns releases all over this Friday.
