The trailer of much-awaited Shah Rukh Khan starrer Fan released yesterday. We had already been introduced to the two main protagonists of the film in its teaser which released last year. Essaying a double role in the film, Shah Rukh will be playing Bollywood superstar Aryan Khanna as well as his biggest fan, Gaurav. For the character of Gaurav, the actor will be seen as a 20 something guy.
The story of Fan remains quite clear of how a fan becomes obsessed with a superstar and starts to show shades of grey when his love and passion for the star takes a creepy turn. It is the trailer that introduces us to this side of Gaurav.
One may be reminded of Vikram Bhatt’s 1996 film Dastak which starred Sushmita Sen as herself, a miss Universe and how Sharad Kapoor’s character is obsessed by her and due to his mental instability, his fandom takes a murderous twist. With Fan of course, the highlight remains Shah Rukh Khan’s persona. The actor’s transformation from Gaurav to Aryan is strikingly impressive in the trailer and finally after overly commercial dramas such as Happy New Year and Dilwale, Shah Rukh takes up something new and challenging.
After films like Darr, Anjaam, Baazigar and Deewana, SRK seems to have come a full circle now that he picks up a negative character again.
The VFX of Fan have been said to be one of the best works in Bollywood. Director Maneesh Sharma, who previously helmed Shuddh Desi Roamance and Band Baaja Baraat, now comes up with Fan. The director’s shift from frothy, over the top romances to an edge-of-the-seat thriller like Fan is certainly a ambitious one. If one can recollect, the director has not actually given a hit post his debut film and we hope this film is not just resting on Shah Rukh Khan’s shoulders only.
Overall, Fan seems to be a film that will work thanks to two things for now, watching Shah Rukh in a double role. Second would be the execution of the film looks fresh with locations ranging from Old Delhi to Croatia. We just hope that Fan manages to wow us with its content and give us a true insight into what it is to be an obsessive fan.
