The latest trend of filmmakers seems to be to turn tried and tested film stories over their head and make films based on the new subjects. Don’t get it? Take the case of Aditya Chopra’s Luv Ka The End. Or this week’s Pyaar Ka Punchnama. Both these films talk about falling out of love, not in love. ‘Luv Ka The End’ is about what happens when a girl decides to give it back to her cheating boyfriend. In ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’, three guys fall in love but soon realise that love is not a bed of roses. In other words, both these films, directed by first-time directors, have tried to do something radically and absolutely different. Perhaps, it is new writers and directors who feel, the youth among the audience is hungry for radically novel entertainment. For, established directors still think twice before venturing out to make such different cinema. Yes, Madhur Bhandarkar is one established filmmaker who made Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji, which also tried to push the envelope. The box-office performance of that film may have been average in some circuits only, but that of the two other films mentioned above and released thereafter has been far from encouraging. Is it a case of fools rushing in where angels fear to tread? Only time will tell!
