The Film Federation of India (FFI) is likely to call off the strike that was to be held on 23 February. Members of the industry met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has assured them that he will look into the waiver of the service tax. The strike, which was to affect shooting, screening and other film related work, will most probably be called off tomorrow.

The government had proposed a move, whereby the film industry would come under the purview of service tax. The industry, already burdened by taxes, including the entertainment tax, protested this move. 25 years ago, the film industry had gone on an indefinite strike to oppose the service tax imposed on them and had succeeded in getting the government to repeal the tax.
