NH10 is the upcoming contemporary drama starring Anushka Sharma and Neil Bhoopalam in the key roles. The film is dark and its gloom is captured well in the soundtrack by various composers who come together for this album.
After Jee Karda from Badlapur really got me feel the angst in it, Chhil Gaye Naina is another number that is painful. Singer Kanika Kapoor who has till now entertained us with significant item numbers like Baby Doll and Lovely, shows us her altogether different side with this song. Her voice is electrifying in this song and the hard-hitting lyrics just compliment it enough. Sanjeev Darshan builds a solid rock number with Chhil Gaye Naina and it’s a song that will win you over with its energy. The starting notes of guitar will remind of Galliyan‘s guitaring but the rest of the song assures you a complete fresh track. Being a fan of rock, this song goes to my list of Bollywood rock which already have Jee Karda of Badlapur and Aao Na from Haider.
Le Chal Mujhe is a deep song that touches your soul both with its lyrics as well as the music. The song has been crooned by Mohit Chauhan who has the skills to make any song sound good and Le Chal Mujhe does just that. The composition by Bann Chakraborty is quite fresh.
This song has been crooned by Shilpa Rao. Her voice gives the song the necessary cold feel. There is much more depth in the female version of Le Chal Mujhe.
Main Jo is an extremely lively number. With its peppy beats, the song has been sung by Nayantara Bhatkal and Savera Mehta. The composition has been done by Ayush Shrestha and I have to agree that it is an extremely novel arrangement of music. This song comes off as situational and is probably during the happier moments shared by the couple. I actually heard this song on loop and loved it.
Khoney De is another version of Le Chal Mujhe. This is a duet number and Neeti Mohan joins Mohit Chauhan for it. The song has a blues feel to it and since Jazz is rarely used in Bollywood, Bann Chakraborty is successful at creating a good illusional environment with it. I loved the song for its pace, it slowly grows on you.
Khoney De also has an instrumental version composed by Bann Chakraborty. This version may be used for the introductory credits of the film. The instrumental version speaks a lot about the film’s story.
Maati Ka Palang has a western and soft rock blend to it. The song has been composed and sung by Samira Koppikar. There are minimal songs in Bollywood films which have progressive music. Even though I loved the song, it seems a misfit for the album. Lyrically Maati Ka Palang is a treat!
Kya Karein is a Rachel Varghese song that has an uncanny resemblance to ‘Kahan Hoon Main‘ from Highway. Both songs have a grave silence in them. The music arrangement is minimum with just a piano. Since I have enjoyed a song like ‘Kahan Hoon Main‘ to its fullest, this (almost a replica) does not work much for me.
Le Chal Mujhe is one of the most repeated songs in the album and after the male, female and instrumental versions, it also has a reprise version. This one has been sung by Arijit Singh and even though he is excellent at the vocals, this song seems unnecessary for the album. Too many versions of the same song makes it extremely irritating for the listener unless he is a hard core music lover to notice the minor differences in each song. This one did not quite work for me.
The NH10 album is extremely different and is a mix of unconventional tracks. Most of the songs follow a progressive music pattern which is not exactly familiar with Bollywood music lovers. I like the way the composers have tried to build a soundtrack that is exemplary to the film’s storyline. My picks from the album are ‘Chhil Gaye Naina‘ and ‘Main Jo‘. Overall the album is a good mix and I am going with a 3/5 for this album.
