EXCLUSIVE! Dil Bechara Actor Deepak Kalra On Sushant Singh Rajput: “He Gave Me His Number…”

The trailer of Dil Bechara starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi will be out today. The film is helmed by Mukesh Chhabra which marks his debut as a director. DB is an official adaptation of the 2014 Hollywood film, The Fault In Our Stars. It will release on Hotstar on July 24. This film will be the last one starring Sushant who died by suicide on last month.
Koimoi interacted with Dil Bechara actor Deepak Kalra about the film, Sushant Singh Rajput and much more. When asked about how similar or different the film is than The Fault In Our Stars, Deepak said, “It’s the official adaptation of TFIOS. But obviously, the whole Indie touch and songs makes it altogether a different film.”
Deepak Kalra said that he plays the college MC in the film. “Every college has someone who takes people on a ride in college fests and events. Kalra the MC is that character, he revealed. We also spoke to Deepak about the film’s digital release, how Sushant wanted to promote it, how he was on the sets, AR Rahman’s music and more. Read the excerpts below:
Dil Bechara is the last film starring Sushant Singh Rajput. What should his fans look forward to in this film?
This is not just a film but it’s a tribute to SSR. The fans are going to love each and every bit of this film.
How was the atmosphere on the sets while working with Sushant and Sanjana?
It was a homely feeling, just so amazing. I have known SSR since Raabta days. I did a fun promotional campaign for that film which went viral. So obviously, we shared that fun element and connection already. So it was quite easy for us to improvise and make the scene more fun. Also, Mukesh sir is a very chilled out director, he doesn’t let his actors get stressed on set.
A lot of fans wanted Dil Bechara to release in theatre as it’s Sushant’s last film. Are you happy with the digital release?
I won’t say the fans are wrong. Makers bhi yahi chahte honge jinhone 2.5 saal khoon paseene lagake yeh film banayi, Lekin iss waqt kya yeh possible hai? We don’t know when will this pandemic end? and when will the theatres reopen? Even if the theatres reopen, it wouldn’t be safe for the families to go and watch. Ab aisi situation main best kya hai? Sabka film dekhna ya kuch logon ka film dekhna? You know the answer. Mera manna hai “Film 100 crore kama ke badi nahi banti, Film badi banti hai jab 100 crore log usse dekhe “
You definitely must have spent a lot of time with Sushant Singh Rajput on the sets? Can you share any anecdotes with him?
I still remember shooting with SSR and we were talking about stars and interstellar and he told me ki aaj raat ko BLOOD MOON hai, The Longest Total Lunar Eclipse of Century (27th august 2018) main to apne ghar se dekhoonga Meade se (his telescope ) aaja tu bhi. He gave me his number and I wasn’t really expecting a reply but he replied ❤️ This was him as a human being.
How was Sushant Singh Rajput on Dil Bechara sets to work with?
He was fun, happy, and chilled out.
Was there any particular way Sushant, Sanjana, and the makers wanted to promote this film?
All I can say is that it would have been grand.
The music of Dil Bechara is by A R Rahman? He’s known for composing magical songs. Can you describe to us how it is in Dil Bechara?
What do you expect from a magician? MAGIC right. Rehman sir ka music ho aur magical na ho to kaise chalega? I have heard two tracks and I can surely say that it’s gonna play on a loop in your playlist once it’s out. Especially the title track is beautiful DIL BECHARA.
You do hosting, have appeared in commercials, short films, and several movies. It’s a busy life for you. Are you happy with your career and every project you star in?
I always believe you should be happy with whatever you have but not satisfied. So yes, I am happy with the projects I do or the content I create because this is what I always wanted to do. Baaki ek ek stair chad rahe hai ek din manzil tak pahuch hi jayenge.
