Nick Cannon On His Children Being Afraid Of Police: “I Try To Teach Fearlessness, But…”

George Floyd’s killing has made the world aware of the racial injustice that surrounds us. Amid the ongoing protests in The US, Nick Cannon has opened up what his kids feel about the police and law enforcement. He addressed the fear that is ingrained in them about the men in uniform.
Nick Cannon is father to three children. Cannon has three children. 9-year-old twins, daughter Monroe and son Moroccan Scott with his ex-wife Mariah Carey, and 3-year-old son Golden with model Brittany Bell.
In a recent interview, Nick Cannon shed light on a conversation that every black parent has with their kids. Nick chooses to call this conversation “stay alive talk.” Nick revealed that even after getting pushed back for saying it, he still stands by the fact that his kids fear the police.
In an interview with Access Hollywood, Nick Cannon said, “I try to teach fearlessness. I try to teach that you have a power within you that you need to fear nothing. But when they see the energy of law enforcement, it’s, ‘Uh, oh, here comes the police!’ Or that mindset of, ‘Sit up straight! Don’t talk! Keep your hands where they can see them!’ These are things that I’m talking to a three-year-old about or a nine-year-old about and they bring those questions to me.”
Further, he added how one of his kids, aspired to be a cop, but later ditched the thought due to the fear. He also added how difficult it is to have that conversation with your kids, but then it is important. Nick Cannon spoke how the aforementioned conversation is a part of the black culture.
Talking about his family history with law enforcement, he said, “I’ve never called the police in my life because our family was afraid to call the police. And that was from a child growing up going, ‘Uh oh, the police showed up!’ It wasn’t about safety. Someone was in trouble. Someone’s gonna go to jail because the police were called. When we see the police in our neighbourhood, it’s never been a good experience.”
In the interview further, Nick Cannon stressed on the fact that law enforcement should begin afresh with a new approach. He also opened up on George Floyd’s shocking killing.
