Every child faces challenges in reading and writing during early school stage. But did you know those who have learning disabilities go through severe bullying for the same? Actress Maya Hawke reveals she faced bullying and was even kicked out of school because she couldn’t read.
The actress reveals that she faced learning difficulties while in school. She even admitted that she was expelled owing to it being too much for the teachers at one school to handle. She also shed light on how her parents, actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, encouraged her to be creative during those trying times.

Maya Hawke told NPR, “I wouldn’t say (I suffer from dyslexia). I would say it is, like, one of the great blessings of my life in a lot of ways.” She continued, “But I did get, like, kicked out of school for not being able to read when I was a kid.”
Talking about it further, Maya Hawke added, “I went to a special school for kids with learning disabilities. And it took me a long time to learn how to read, and I still am limited.”
Talking about how her learning disability was a hurdle for her in reading scripts, she said she was forced to find alternative ways to understand them. Said the Stranger Things actress, “The wonderful thing about today’s world is that there are so many options. There’s something about having had a limitation in regards to my ability to produce and take in stories that made me even more determined to love them and understand them and grow in them.”

Maya Hawke also spoke about how her parents encouraged her to be creative. She said, “It was deeply difficult, you know, to be in a slow class. Every grade that went by, you get dropped down into a lower and lower reading group. And other kids find out. And there’s bullying in place. But my parents did a wonderful job of encouraging me to be creative.”
