In Avengers: Endgame, when Captain America goes back in time to place the infinity stones, he returns as an old man. At that time, we all know that it was the end of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s journey for Chris Evans aka Steve Rogers.
When Captain America returns to present as old Steve Rogers with no superpowers, he gives his shield to Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie. However, the shield is in a good state with no scratch at all. But during the final battle, we all show how Thanos damaged Cap’s vibranium shield into half using his double-bladed sword.
As reported by screenrant, when Captain America went back in time to place the infinity stones, he changed timelines. The portal reports that the shield Rogers gave to Falcon looked similar to the original one, but the detailing was different. Falcon’s shield has a thin stripe in the middle and also star cutouts which Cap’s shield didn’t have. Also, makers didn’t show us how they repaired Captain America’s broken shield in Avengers: Endgame. It means, Steve either asked Howard Stark or T’Challa to create this new shield specifically for Sam aka Falcon when he went back in time. This proves that he did change the timeline by meeting either of them.

When directors Joe and Anthony Russo were asked about this specific query which many fans had raised, their answers differed from film’s writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The Russo Brothers said that Steve created a new timeline where he decided to stay with Peggy. The writers said that it’s all a part of MCU continuity. Markus and McFeely also said that there have always been two Steve Rogers in the MCU all this time. But if that’s the case, we haven’t met the second Steve Rogers yet.
