
Prithviraj Sukumaran’s latest release, Khalifa, hit theaters on August 20. It was one of the two Onam releases of the season. The film has had a slow start at the box office owing to mixed reviews from the audience and critics. In addition, the film lost the Onam clash to Nivin Pauly’s super-successful Bethlehem Kudumba Unit. The latter became the first choice among audiences this Onam. The Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer had a lot of hype pre-release. Owing to the buzz, the film registered an opening of 5.35 crore in India against 1967 shows. However, from day 2, it saw a dip in collections and was affected by the success of the Bethlehem Kudumba Unit. On Onam day, the film grossed 1.35 crore, and on Thursday, it earned 1.25 crore. The film lost more shows in India after the release of Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups. The net total of the film during its extended opening week stands at 16.62 crore, which equals 19.61 crore gross.

It is the trailing film, Mohanlal and Mammootty’s Patriot, which has earned 26.98 crore in its opening week.

Directed by Vysakh, Khalifa reunites the filmmaker with Prithviraj for the first time since Pokkiriraja (2011). The film was considered a strong contender for an Onam release. However, the film is headed for a box office disappointment and may end up as Prithviraj’s third consecutive failure.
