Whenever the debate of method acting takes place, the names like Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks and Christian Bale never skip our minds. We have seen these legends going to any extent for getting under the skin of the character. Our today’s piece too is dedicated to one of the aforementioned actors of Hollywood.
Today, here we’ll be talking about Hanks’ efforts behind 2000 release, Cast Away. The spine chilling survival drama was well appreciated by critics as well as the ticket paying audience. The actor was even nominated in the Best Actor in a Leading Role at 73rd Academy Awards. But for that pat on the back, Hanks had to give it all.
For Cast Away, Tom Hanks had to nail the look of a man stranded on an uninhabited island. The film is all about his attempts for survival and returning home. Expectedly, the actor experimented with his body by losing some pounds and he didn’t even take a bath for several days.
Everything was going well until Tom Hanks got a nasty cut on his leg. Further, things got worse as it turned out to be a staph infection. The case was so severe that it could have taken a toll on the actor’s life due to blood poisoning.
Describing the whole incident, Hanks had said, “The doctor said to me, ‘What’s the matter with you, you idiot? You could have died from this thing’. Then we had to shut down production for three weeks because the doctors said, ‘No way is this kid getting in the water’,” as reported by news.com.au.
