Trade analysts in Bollywood have been speaking about the growing impact of Hollywood releases here in India. With dubbed versions in regional languages like Tamil, Telugu & Kannada becoming norm for big ticket Hollywood releases, these films have grown their share of the Indian film market exponentially this year.
With over 2800 screens, adrenaline rush driven ‘Fast and Furious 7’ went on to gross 150 crores in India; swallowing the YRF co-production ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!’. ‘Avengers- Age of Ultron’, also a widescreen release, has earned around 83 crores in lifetime business from the Indian mark. What’s more interesting here is, both these films helped exhibitors by ensuring footfalls during a lean season when most Hindi films, except ‘Gabbar is Back’ did slow business.
This month, ‘Jurassic World’ has managed to gross over 52 crores so far, and is holding steady during a period when many Hindi films are competing for screen space. Interestingly, ‘Inside Out’, the Disney- Pixar film that released last week, has had the biggest opening for an animation film at 2.05 crores over the weekend. Often labeled a kids’ category, it has fared better than the insignificant Bollywood films that competed with it (Miss Tanakpur Hazir Ho, Uvaa). The cumulative box office collection of Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out is 3.27 crores. The film is expected to have a fabulous second week, especially due to great word of mouth and it being appreciated by kids and adults alike. Inside Out, is the Highest animation grosser of 2015.
The dinosaurs took on Vidya Balan & Emraan Hashmi with ease, once again proving that audience tastes are slowly but surely altering.
With ‘Terminator Genysis’ competing alongside the quirky ‘Guddu Rangeela’, outcomes for this week will be worth watching out for. Add to that, the fact that most multiplexes in urban centres continue to give ‘Jurassic World’ and ‘Inside Out’ space, and Hollywood’s growing appeal remains a significant change to Indian films.
