‘Barfi!‘ has done much better business than what one expected till a day before its release. Good to excellent word of mouth coupled with fabulous all around reviews and curiosity to see Ranbir Kapoor in action has resulted in the film being very steady over the weekdays as well, hence resulting in the first week collections of around 58.6 crores. Interestingly, while collections showed an escalation on Wednesday due to Ganesh Chaturthi, they were hit to some extent on Thursday due to all-India ‘bandh’.
Nevertheless, these are still very good collections for a film that arrived with an offbeat tag. In the process they have even left behind the first week collections of ‘Raaz 3‘, which by the way were again fabulous. However what matters most is the fact that the film has been accepted by the audience and that is good news indeed for Bollywood which has seen some very different and unique films doing so well this year, hence making it one of the best that industry has seen in a very long time.
The success rate for Bollywood has been quite high in 2012 and barring a couple of disasters (that were always in the making), there hasn’t been any surprise whatsoever. What has turned out to be a pleasant surprise indeed is the arrival of films belonging to various genres that have all enticed audience to stepping into theatres. It is a welcome sign indeed and only makes one further look forward to different subjects like ‘OMG Oh My God!‘, ‘English Vinglish‘, ‘Kismet Love Paisa Dilli‘, ‘Aiyyaa‘ and ‘Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana‘ to do well too before the end of year.
Meanwhile coming back to ‘Barfi!‘, a lifetime total of over 80 crores is pretty much on the cards. Since there is at least one notable film every week from this point on, the Anurag Basu directed affair won’t quite enjoy the kind of clean run it would have wanted. However it would be interesting to see whether the film comes close to Ranbir Kapoor’s highest grosser, though a multistarrer, till date – ‘Raajneeti‘.
