2016 could have been touted to be a year that a lot of Khan fans would have been eagerly waiting for. Why? Well, Shah Rukh Khan has two releases Fan & Raees, Salman Khan’s much-awaited Sultan and of course Aamir Khan’s Dangal, all release this year.
Overall too, 2016 has a lot to offer for big stars since Ajay Devgn’s directorial Shivaay will release this year. Also, Hrithik Roshan has his much-anticipated period drama, Mohenjo Daro hitting the theaters soon. So should we expect, the box office to score high this year?

Looking at how the year has taken off, it has to be said that the audiences are opting for more of content bases films. Akshay Kumar’s Airlift released in the first month of the new year itself and even made it to the 100 crore club. On the other hand, sex comedies have shown a slump with Kyaa Kool Hai Hum & Mastizaade performing average.

In the upcoming two months, we are expecting an average business. Even big banner films like Kapoor & Sons is not expected to get past a 55-60 crores of business. John Abraham’s Rocky Handsome too is expected to wrap up with a 50 crores business.
The big April release will be Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan. A non-holiday release, the film has already generated enough hype and is obviously the second 100 crore entrant of the year. It is expected to make a business similar to Dilwale and may fall short of a couple of crores from the 150 crore mark.
Post Fan, June will have a big multi-starrer release, Housefull 3. Since it is a franchise film, the business will be good. The film is expected to pull off a business of 160 crores plus.
July will be a big month with the mammoth of a clash between Raees and Sultan. As Salman and Shah Rukh fight it out at the box office, both films are expected to turn out big. Raees is expected to make a business of 210-215 crores where as, Sultan may outperform it. Considering Salman will be seen in an action avatar, the film is expected to generate more footfalls and make a business of approx 230 crores.
Hrithik Roshan’s Mohenjo Daro is expected to be a money spinner too. Considering the Ashutosh Gowariker-Hrithik Roshan combo, the film may fetch a business of 180 crores plus.
The final quarter has some big releases lined up. There will be Shivaay, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Dangal and Befikre spread over the festive time of Diwali and Christmas. With the holiday spirit around, Shivaay, Befikre and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil all three seem to have great chances to cross 100 crores.
Aamir’s Dangal is definitely expected to mint huge money but it seems it won’t get past his own record of PK which collected 339 crores at the domestic box office. Dangal is expected to become the highest grosser of 2016 with a collection of approx 260 crores.
Looks like, 2016 will have no entrants into the 300 crore club. We wonder if Sultan and Raees don’t clash, is it possible for any of the two films to achieve this feat?
