Shortly after the release of Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh starrer Udta Punjab, our reader has written an interesting column to us how he is flattered by the film. As a guest blog post by our readers, Koimoi.com brings to you a write up by Saurabh Kshatriya. Read on…
Well beyond the PUNJAB DE LASSI, SARSO DA SAAG, MAKKEY DE ROTI and BEAUTIFUL KHETS where we have often seen SRK romancing Kajol (DDLJ) and wooing Preity Zinta (Veer Zara) and other beautiful ladies in many blockbusters, this time we have come across to a film which shows a different side of Punjab (which is of course bad but doesn’t show Punjab in a bad light as every state has its share of pros and cons) and we loved it too.
Although we have seen most of the people liking the film and few disliking it as well (am sure they will have justified reasons for that) but as a movie buff, I would like to share my thoughts which makes me believe that it is not just a drug drama, it has the corners of a human’s personality, problems and reciprocation towards it. Here is my bit:
We all are Tommy Singh don’t you think??
OK OK I am not calling anyone a drug addict or a wild brat who has no idea what He/She is doing but just think for once that are we not addicted to something in our life badly? It could be anything. May be smoking or a continuous drinking, it may be your past which was bad and you are continuously thinking about it or your partner who no longer exists in your life but you are still hooked. But at the end, our addiction is affecting us only and we lose our focus from all sorts because we are not able to fight with ourselves. In the film, he (Shahid Kapoor) realized and made that attempt but in reality, are we ready to take that step??? Well played Shahid!!!
We all are somewhere impatient and desperate??
Let’s take it in way that we all are making our efforts to make our life better but aren’t we forgetting our values somewhere? It might not be the case with everybody but because of lack of patience or out of desperation, we often make decisions to get early results without looking at their consequences involved in a broader picture and by the time we feel like getting out of it, we realize that we are already into it. This is what Alia’s character was all about. Unknowingly she got into something which made it impossible for her to come out and her life gets more and more worst. “ACHA TIME” is important but at the cost you can afford.
Who will take the step??
Well this is one attitude I guess we are born with. If there is garbage on the road side or potholes on the road, we blame our government for that. This is small but somewhere we need someone to blame for our present condition (if it is bad in any way) as we could see Cop Sartaj Singh (Diljit Dosanjh) blames other kids for influencing his brother towards drugs to which Dr. Preet Sahani boldly replies “APNE BACHCHE WADIYA, DUSRON DE KHRAB” (our kids are good, others’ are bad).
In the film, Dr. Preet (well not to ignore that it was played by none other than Kareena Kapoor Khan) was more of an inner voice of Sartaj who influences him to finish the menace but in reality, are we ready to listen to that inner voice and fight for something which is our responsibility as a citizen. After all we are responsible for the future which we are going to give to the coming generation. Is it necessary to face the consequences first and then react upon like Sartaj did in the film? Can’t we become a self-motivated individual like Dr. Preet who is holding the fort without any benefit just because somebody has to do that??? At least we can try!
Well, the credit goes to the captain of the ship Abhishek Chaubey for shaping this drug drama in such a way that each character could come out as an inspiration in the film and this is why UDTA PUNJAB is one of its kind films. It might not earn 100 or 200 crores at the Box office but it definitely deserves a page in the history of Hindi Film Industry and will be remembered for bringing a hidden issue in the light with such inspirational characters on screen.
On the whole, “Ye Baat Keval Punjab ki Hi Nai Hai Ye Baat Hai Ham Sab Ki” (This is not about only Punjab but about all of us).
