When Sridevi along with the dancing star of the era, Jeetendra, did Tathaiya Tathaiya, in 1983’s blockbuster Himmatwala, all were dumbfounded and were pushed to the edge to dance on the zingy beats and catchy number. The song went viral and so did Sridevi’s look in the song, which has time and again, been revisited by the new age Bollywood heroines be it Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, Vidya Balan or Rani Mukerji.
Ajay Devgn and Tamannaah Bhatia are all set to bring the 80s era back with Sajid Khan’s Himmatwala, an official remake of the film by the same name. The film was termed as a trendsetter and for years to come was imitated and is still dittoed and parodied on screen, especially the Naino Me Sapna dance number.
Sridevi in Naino Me Sapna
The original number which was the chartbuster of the 80s era, picturised on Sridevi, saw her wearing beautifully crafted headgears, colorful aamrapali costumes, dancing on a beach with over-sized wheels and series of colorful pots, wooing her man in screen Jeetendra. The look Sri sported in the song, is till date mirrored by the ladies of the tinsel town.
Deepika Padukone in Dhoom Taana
When “Miss Fine legs”, Deepika Padukone, debuted in the tinsel town opposite Badshah Shah Rukh Khan, in the 2007 chartbuster cine Om Shanti Om, she grabbed a lot of eyeballs. And when she went onto don the look, in orange toned aamrapali, she won accolades immediately. Her fine dancing skills and the portrayal left all amazed.
Katrina Kaif in Paisa Paisa
The hip hop song that was on everyone’s lips in 2009, hummed even till today was Paisa Paisa from the movie De Dana Dan, in which the firangi babe of the tinsel town, went ahead and enrobed a red 80s costume in one of the sequences, which brought Katrina Kaif into the firangi gone desi frame. Her look was applauded by one and all and added the “Ting!” quotient to the song.
Vidya Balan in Ooh!La La
By far the best cinematic replication, of the 80s look of Sridevi, was by our very own Ooh! La la dirty babe, Vidya Balan now Roy Kapur, in The Dirty Picture (2011). Vidya not only re-defined the look, but even added more glitz and glamour to it. She outshone all with her sexy, dirty look, apt for the song and the film. Vidya grabbed too many eyeballs for her bold depiction, but the song was a rage and still continues to be, and its her look now that is up for re-illustration on screen.
Rani Mukerji in Dreamum Wakeupum
Another worth applauding pictorialization of the 80s look was by Rani Mukerji in Aiyyaa (2012) which gave Rani an extra edge as an actress. She not only gloriously performed but also brought on the forefront the whole look which created ripples and also gauged attention. Rani did full justice to the look by adding her personal touch to it. All just exclaimed “Ayi YaiYo” after seeing Rani in the modern yet classic aamrapali apparel.
Tamannah Bhatia in Naino Me Sapna
Bringing the 80s back in 2013, with the remake of original Himmatwala, is the leading lady Tamannaah Bhatia, who illustrates on screen Sridevi’s role in the cine. Tamannaah, who is trying too hard to carve a niche for herself in the B-town, after being successful down south, does a modern version of Ta Tathiya along with Ajay Devgn, and manages to impress people.
“Tamannaah’s look in the film is very 80’s but we have made sure it doesn’t look like a spoof. The look is something that you can relate to the 80s as well as something that the audience will like to see now, we have used bright colours, big bold stripes, the typical 80′ acid wash denim look, the super fitted churidar kurtas and of course the iconic Aamrapali costume from the 80s,” chirped the stylist Rick Roy.
With the era of 80s hitting back in 2013, we are sure the trend notches up even higher as it has already gone viral all around.
