I wanted the feeling to sink in! The teaser of Sanju starring Ranbir Kapoor was released the day before yesterday and like all movie aficionados, even I was zapped by what I saw. I saw it once, twice, thrice and then a couple of times more. There were quite a few adjectives that came to my mind while I was watching what unfolded in front of me.
…and then I decided to give it a day.
I allowed the moments to settle down and then played the teaser all over again yesterday. Once, twice, thrice. What I came to realize was that this was indeed something special waiting to be unveiled.
It isn’t just about the true portrayal of Sanjay Dutt that is expected to unfold on screen.
It isn’t just about the ease with which Ranbir Kapoor has changed himself into Sanjay Dutt.
It isn’t just about how Rajkumar Hirani is promising to bring his trademark touch all over again.
It isn’t just about the various life phases of Bollywood original ‘bad boy’ that audiences would evidence.
It appears to be lot more than all of that combined together!
Honestly, I was expecting something truly dramatic that would kick-start the campaign for Sanju. Perhaps the background of Khalnayak that would run as Ranbir Kapoor walks down the hallway with chains and ‘hathkadi’ as his companion. I thought there would be a close up of his eyes as he stares into the camera. I thought that there would be a famous dialogue from one of his superhits that would be thrown in.
None of that happened, and that’s because Hirani had a different idea. Something that is expected out of him, which is to bring the unexpected.
A teaser like this hasn’t been made before. The man is a complete original and he has shown all over again how he has such a command over the medium.
Be it the Munnbhai series, 3 Idiots, PK or now Sanju, the subject could well be serious. However the manner in which he gives it a light hearted treatment that has a strong emotional connect is what sets him apart. He seems to have done that again with just this small teaser and so much more is still waiting to be unveiled.
Waise toh sab kehte hain ki ‘picture abhi baaki hai mere dost’. In case of Sanju, ‘trailer bhi abhi baaki hai mere dost’!
When that strikes, it is going to be a hurricane no less.
Waiting for that!
