While the trade may speculate whether Kites would work in small centres or not because heroine Barbara Mori speaks in Spanish, here’s what the film’s writer-director, Anurag Basu, has to say. “I have grown up in Bhilai and I still have the small-town sensibilities. There’s nothing in Kites which will not be understood in small places. It has been made for the big cities as well as small towns and villages.” To the question as to how much Spanish the film has, Basu replied, “Not much, really. And since Hrithik Roshan, with whom Barbara speaks in Spanish, also doesn’t understand the language, the audience will not feel alienated, left out or cheated.”
