Fox Star Studios India, which bought the worldwide rights of Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol starrer My Name Is Khan for Rs. 85 crore, is going to town with the weekend collections of the film which it claims are a gross Rs. 900 million.The fact that the film has performed badly since Monday, February 15, does not figure at all in their communication with the press.
MNIK, one of the most anticipated films of the year, opened to a rousing reception abroad but the initial response across India was not as exciting as Overseas.Collections picked up beautifully on Sunday, but they dropped fast and furiously from Monday onwards, bringing its profitability into question.The gross revenue figures being circulated in the media only indicate the total earnings and not the distributors’ profits.Typically, the profits are one-third of the gross earnings of a particular film.So even if we are to believe the figure of Rs. 900 million gross earnings, a simple calculation shows that the film has generated Rs. 300 million over the weekend.Not to speak of the drop in footfalls at cinemas Monday onwards.
Surely, the film is creating waves globally but in India, the audience attendance has fallen rather badly.
