So there is a surge of women centric and female oriented films in Bolywood? Think again, before you spurt it out to Priyanka Chopra. She now possesses the expertise to box you down, post – Mary Kom, for making the remark so loosely.
The actress in an interview to Koimoi objected to the term female centric films. She said, “I get very irritated when people call female films, female centric movies. Why man? When a male actor stars in a movie, why doesn’t anyone point and say that a male oriented film has released, let’s catch it this Friday. It is necessary to do away with these terms and move away from the gender bias. Atleast let’s walk towards equality if not attain equality immediately. Obviously it will take a while to reach that place. I am glad that my films in whatever little way possible has been a contribution to it.”
Talking about her experience of signing Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion, the actress continued with, “When I had done Fashion, I remember everyone advising me against it. People had said heroines do it at the end of their careers. No one watches heroine oriented film. We were an A certificate film, that released on Diwali alongside Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal. The fact that the film even took an opening was a big step towards cinema changing. I think that step is finally evolving now. From Fashion to now, the kind of films that have come has girls playing parts, where they are getting great roles to do. Like 2 States had Alia Bhatt playing a great part and the film was a huge success. You have to give credit to both. It is very nice to see that and slowly hope for the generation after me that they will be able to do films like that. It shouldn’t matter whether the film is a male or female oriented movie. A good damn movie should matter.”

I hope Mary Kom qualifies as a damn good movie for all. The actress has put in her blood and sweat into the role and quite visibly. The buzz for the film is strong as the movie releases tomorrow and will follow the reign of the ladies!
