For Javed Akhtar, the first fortnight of April has been very eventful. On 15th, he took oath as member of the Rajya Sabha to which he was recently nominated. Thirteen days before that, he was conferred an honorary doctorate by the University of Pondicherry. So, the lyricist and writer can now officially call himself Dr. Javed Akhtar. Incidentally, wife Shabana Azmi has been conferred the doctorate thrice – in 2003, by the Jadavpur University in West Bengal; in 2005, by the Leeds University in the UK; and in 2008, by the Jamia Milia University in Delhi. Shabana was also nominated to the Upper House of Parliament some years ago.
Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar’s is the first instance in Indian history, of a husband and wife, both being nominated to the RS, though at different times.
