While India stood still at the death of sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar very recently, the Indian music industry pledged to make sure the nation is unbound by some overtly beautiful numbers, sung direct dil se. From the raunchy Chikni Chameli, to the lovely Raabta and the desi Fevicol Se, songs this year were high on volume and verve, as our singers put it their best efforts to make each song a masterpiece in its own regards.
A Koimoi look at the female voices that spiced up the flavour this year:
Starting the year with the ultimate bang, our India’s new Lady Nightingale Shreya Ghoshal pumped up the beats with a beautifully lusty and sinfully sensuous Chikni Chameli that worked like a maverick to the tympanic channels. The voice suited the song oh-so-fittingly and we drooled over this item dance throughout the year non stop!
The show stealer who matched tunes with the biggest international icon today, Akon and gifted us with an infectious Chammak Chhallo was high on cards as she swooned to the utterly romantic and so-much-in-love Raabta number from Agent Vinod. While our heads swayed on our beloved’s shoulder, hands tucked in each other’s palms, this song defined romanticism like no other. Certainly, Hamsika’s magic recreated some successful spells over the masses, at large!
Another singer who has changed the entire scenario by plunging into spotlight with a soothing Iktara, Kavita Seth set temperatures soaring when she went the friendship road with Tumhi ho Bandhu. The new friendship anthem of sorts, Kavita’s voice blended with the music and the product was no less than something sensational! You bet.
The reigning queen of the throne, the superbly talented and immensely versatile Bong artist stuck to what she does best: romantic soulful renditions. And The Aashiyan number form Barfi! was just a perfect concoction of good lyrics, along with Shreya’s supreme genius that made the song cutely adorable. Shreya Ghoshal’s strength lies in her voice tone and she used it effortlessly well to create a gem under the able guidance of Pritam, the magician.
Another lovely romantic track that got the nation swaying to it was Tarannum Mallick’s painful romantic saga Saiyaara. Bringing in the agony and angst with perfect changes in the voice tenacity and singing with the right mix of feelings, Tarannum scored real high on our cards with this number.
When Shreya is leading, Sunidhi cannot lag behind, that’s always been the case for these two contemporaries, Giving a tough fight to the finish to all the other contenders is our immensely versatile and talented Sunidhi Chauhan who deviated form her usual chartbuster track to gift us with a melodious number in typical Marathi mulgi istyle. Navrai Majhi and Sridevi might have rocked the country, but it was Sunidhi who conjured up all the tricks rightly under her sleeve!
The Katiya Karu girl was back, and how! With a painfully striking soulful number as Heer, riding super high on her shoulders, this youngster took the responsibility with elegance and that showed. The ardour in her voice, the way she perfectly portrayed the pangs of the protagonist’s life with conviction, deserve an applause! She might not have done much, but what she rendered was enough to pinch all our lachrymal glands, wetting some boxes of tissues all over. You made us cry like babies, gal!
Fevicol se is more rural, more desi, the rustic charm of the song is brought to life by an ardent stint by singer Mamta Sharma, who has already made her name, quite in a big manner, courtesy her string of item chart busters. The young bubbly girl poured in all that she had to make Fevicol Se stand out like no one else, whitewashing almost everything that we heard throughout the year. Infectious, addictive and edgy, Mamta transformed Fevicol Se to a consort battleship, one that is immovable!
