Rangrezz is the official Hindi remake of the critically acclaimed hit Tamil film, Nadodigal which has already been remade in four languages including Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Bengali. The film has been directed by Priyadarshan who seems to have become some sort of a specialist in remaking films from Southern languages. Produced by Vashu Bhagnani, the film stars Jackky Bhagnani and Priya Anand (of English Vinglish fame) in lead roles. Music for this film has been composed by Sajid-Wajid along with guest composer, Sundar C.Babu who had also scored for the Tamil version. Lyrics have been penned by Sameer.
Dil Ko Aaya Sukoon opens this album with the dependable vocals of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan designed to make the listener croon along with this hummable track. This Qawwali styled number also has upcoming singer Hiral Brahmbhatt singing for the female lead and she surely is a talent to watch out for. Her voice complements Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice and together they create a melodious romantic number. The downside of this song is that this tune sounds all too familiar, especially coming from Sajid-Wajid and thus does not have much impact in spite of it sounding reasonably good.
Govinda Aala Re is next in line and is the typical festive number. This one too suffers with the same problem as Dil Ko Aaya Sukoon. There is no wow factor in the song which could have made it different from the other festive songs that we have heard in the recent releases and thus refuses to rise above the ordinary. Therefore, in spite of the spirited rendition by the film’s music director Wajid himself, this fun filled song, though peppered with danceable beats, does not leave an impression and will be soon forgotten.
After two very run-of-the-mill tracks from Sajid-Wajid, comes the racy Shambhu Shiv Shambhu which is sure to change the perspective of the listener vis-à-vis the quality of this album. The hard hitting lyrics coupled with the pulsating tempo of the song are something that will surely captivate and enthrall the listener. This particular number which sounds to be more of a background song has two versions – one sung by Sukhwinder Singh and another by Shankar Mahadevan, who also had rendered his vocals to the original Tamil version of the song (composed by Sundar C. Babu himself). Sukhwinder Singh’s wonderfully unique voice does the trick all over again. The lyrics of this track too are slightly different which further distinguishes this number from the other version. Though Sukhwinder Singh’s version is very good, it is the version sung by Shankar Mahadevan that wins hands down. Shankar’s voice range is just unparalleled and he infuses the requisite fervor and passion needed for a song of this nature that can be matched by very few of his contemporaries.
The final song in the album is Yaaron Aisa Hai, which has been composed by Sundar C.Babu and has music director-cum-singer, Salim Merchant taking centre-stage. This song, which is basically an ode to friendship, boasts of heartwarming lyrics and has been sung excellently by Salim Merchant. However his voice is eclipsed by the music which is overwhelming yet poignant. All in all, an excellent finale to the album.
Overall, the soundtrack of Rangrezz is not something which can be classified as path breaking by any standards. Still, there surely are a couple of good tracks like Shambo Shiv Shambo and Yaaron Aisa Hai which have the potential to turn out to be chartbusters if promoted and used well in the film. Most of the recent compositions from Sajid- Wajid, despite sounding good, bring along a sense of déjà vu which is a bit of a downer in itself and is surely a matter of concern. Hope they can come out with better and quality compositions in the future that will reinstate the trust of the listeners in their music.
