There are very few people who attempt movies like ‘Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi’ though the number is seeing a gradual increase. However since this movie is one of its kinds with an unusual pairing of Farah Khan and Boman Irani, it has definitely piqued the interest levels. To add to that, with SLB banner attached, the movie does draw good attention. Keeping all this in mind, one would expect Jeet Ganguly’s music (with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya) that would suit the unusual plot and characters and has its unique elements even though it may not be grabbed by one and all.
Album begins with a romantic track ‘Ishq Mein Tere Bina’ which does capture audience attention. Shreya Ghoshal and KK have lent their voices and though the song sounds like just another romantic track, if shot well with the antics of Boman Irani and Farah coming into play, one can be assured to see some naughtiness and fun element on screen. Lyrics are casual and go with the mood.
Shreya Ghosal continues in her mesmerizing voice with ‘Khatti Meethi’. It’s a song, which depicts a woman’s desires and her happiness in life when she has found someone. Shreya is an apt choice for this Hinglish song and does good justice. Jeet Ganguly has kept the tempo high for this which expresses happiness. Still, even though the notes are right, song still falls short of becoming a superhit. It is not ‘Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye’ [DDLJ] though audience would have loved to see Farah dance on something to that tune.
Album moves forward with ‘Kaafir Andhere’ and changes the mood of the album. KK has sung this song brilliantly in his typical style (at high note) that suits the mood and turns out to be effective. Song is melancholic in nature and expresses a lover’s frustration with life and circumstances. Amitabh has excelled himself with lyrics for this song that conveys emotions and feelings quite poetically.
Title song ‘Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi’ opens with a bang in Neeraj Shridhar’s voice. It has been used in all promos so far and is effectively marketing the movie. Song covers the theme aptly and is able to help the audience communicate with the subject, hence solving the purpose. It’s a peppy, foot tapping number, which sets the mood of the plot. Neeraj Shreedhar reminds one of many of his cover versions (remember ‘Zarrorat Hai Zarrorat Hai’?) and a listener doesn’t mind the reprise. Music is energetic and fast paced while being complemented by fun lyrics.
Mohit Chauhan makes an entry in the album with a very unique track ‘Kuku Duku’. It’s after ages that one gets to hear such a funky song which reminds you of lyrics from the Kishore Kumar days. It comes with the same fun and frolic, hence bringing on the charm. Add to that the fact that it’s very rare to hear words like ‘Gadhera’, something which is incorporated well here. It’s a song that has in it to turn out to be popular.
Another stalwart makes an entry in the album with Faraz Ali written ‘Rhamba Mein Sambha’. Usha Uthup, after mesmerizing audiences with ‘Darling’ [7 Khoon Maaf] and ‘Aami Shotti Bolchi’ [Kahaani], tries to bring on a similar spirited mood. The song is upbeat and she does sing it in her own famous boisterous style. However, it does not have enough ingredients to result in a hat trick for the singer. It turns out to be an average track which listeners won’t remember for long
Overall, the album is packaged decently for a movie which promises a different story. Jeet Ganguly should make his mark with some tracks in this album. Amitabh Bhattacharya has understood the film’s plot and written lyrics accordingly. Though audience would have loved to say ‘Jeet Ganguly Ki Toh Nikal Padi’, the album falls short by some notches. Nevertheless, Farah Khan and Bomna Irani might bring on some magic with their charm.
