In a recent interview with the New Indian Express, veteran filmmaker Sibi Malayil opened up about his failed collaboration with Kamal Haasan for his Tamil debut in ‘Gunaa.’ Despite the renewed interest in Kamal’s film, particularly referenced in the recent Malayalam hit ‘Manjummel Boys,’ Sibi shared insights into why he ultimately decided to pass on the opportunity to direct the project.

Sibi discussed their failed collaboration from the 90s, initially planned as a Tamil movie produced by Raj Kamal Films International’s manager DNS. The concept focused on a commercial film about the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka. Still, Kamal dropped the idea due to its controversial nature, exacerbated by Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination.

Following this, the duo commenced planning for “Gunaa.” However, Sibi Malayil was preoccupied with his film “Bharatham,” starring Mohanlal in the lead role. Sibi elaborated, stating Kamal expressed interest in portraying a slightly eccentric character, which prompted us to develop the concept of Gunaa. Sibi enlisted the support of Sab John, who shared a strong rapport with both Kamal and Sibi, along with cinematographer Venu. Additionally, they sought assistance from Tamil writer Balakumaran. As discussions surrounding Gunaa persisted, Sibi had to divert his attention to his ongoing project, Bharatham.

Amidst the hustle of filming, Kamal extended an invitation to Sibi for a photoshoot. However, Sibi was tangled up in prior obligations in Kanchipuram, which coincided with Bharatham’s release schedule. Once Sibi wrapped up his commitments in Kanchipuram, he went to Kamal’s office, only to find Kamal visibly troubled. This unfortunate misunderstanding eventually led to their professional paths diverging.

Kamal Haasan wrapped up the production of Gunaa with his long-time associate Santhana Bharathi, who took on the director role. While Venu and Sab continued their involvement in the crew, Sibi was notably absent from Gunaa’s sets.
