Faced with an arranged marriage she doesn’t want, Merida runs away into the forest, where she encounters a witch, who teaches her a dangerous spell.

The film pipped Frankenweenie, ParaNorman, The Pirates! Band of Misfits and Wreck-It Ralph, to win the prestigious trophy.

Director Andrews was “brave” enough to wear a kilt to the Oscar stage and collect the trophy.
