Keira Knightley was “shocked” to see salary comparisons with her husband
Keira Knightley once recalled that she was “shocked” to learn that there were actually news articles that compared her earnings to those of her husband, James Righton. She recalled how her mother and stage actress, Sharman Macdonald, earned more than her father, Will Knightley, who was also an actor. But the gap in salaries was never an issue.
In an interview with Porter in 2020, Keira Knightley said, “That’s what our national newspapers are telling girls – that you have to feel guilty about doing well if it’s making a man feel uncomfortable, which it doesn’t with my husband and it didn’t with my dad. But yet our society is telling us that’s what it should be.”
Being a feminist, Keira has spoken up for women’s rights on multiple occasions. She also has played the feminist activist Sally Alexander in Misbehaviour (2020).
Previously, Keira Knightley has been amongst the rare actresses who spoke up about Disney princesses. She revealed her daughter was banned from watching Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, or Sleeping Beauty because of its regressive approach towards women.
