The year 2020 continues to be the worst as we have lost another gem of a person from the world. A huge loss is coming in from the literature world as John Le Carré, the specialist of spy novels has breathed his last.
Yes, the spy novelist legend has passed away. He was 89 years old. He lost his life while battling pneumonia on 12th December in Cornwall, England. His death was confirmed in a statement by his publisher. Jonny Geller, CEO of The Curtis Brown Group and Carré’s agent said, “He was an undisputed giant of English literature. He defined the Cold War era and fearlessly spoke truth to power in the decades that followed. I have lost a mentor, an inspiration and most importantly, a friend. We will not see his like again.”
John Le Carré was popular for his works like The Spy Who Came In From The Cold And Tinker, Soldier, Spy and much more. For the unversed, before holding a pen as a writer, Le Carré had been a British intelligence officer and thus, articulated his thoughts with realism in his spy novels.
John Le Carré had given birth to an iconic detective character of George Smiley. The character had shades of a real-world and far away from flamboyant personality, much of which we see in spy thrillers. Due to such a realistic approach, George became a huge hit amongst the audience.
The legendary writer has penned 25 novels and one memoir, with a sale of around 60 million copies to his credit. He is survived by his wife, four sons, 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Meanwhile, Twitter has exploded with emotional reactions on the legendary writer’s death. Author Stephen King wrote, “John le Carre has passed at the age of 89. This terrible year has claimed a literary giant and a humanitarian spirit.” Irish novelist Adrian McKinty wrote, “if you’ve never read John Le Carre who sadly passed away yesterday. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is the place to start as good as the BBC TV & recent film adaptation is neither comes close to capturing the brilliance of this book, quite simply the greatest spy novel ever written…”
