Golden Globes 2021: Sacha Baron Cohen Dedicates The Award To ‘Borat 2’ Crew Who ‘Risked Their Personal Safety’

Turns out there’s a lot of room in that grey Borat suit. Sacha Baron Cohen, who celebrated wins for best actor and best picture motion picture comedy or musical for his “Borat Subsequent Movie Film” at the Golden Globes on Sunday, reflected in a backstage press conference about the fearless filmmakers at his side.
“It’s wonderful recognition for me and particular for our incredibly hard-working crew,” Baron Cohen told journalists over Zoom. “People who really risked their personal safety, arrest — there were times I had to wear a bulletproof vest. There were really dangerous situations.”
Baron-Cohen has spoken at length about the arduous shoot, which saw cameras rolling up to three weeks before the film’s Amazon Prime release last October. In both Globes acceptance speeches, the actor took jabs at Donald Trump and his advisors — including Rudy Giuliani, who became one of the most viral punchlines of “Subsequent Movie Film.”
“We felt we had to make this movie because of the dangers of Trump. Amazingly we pulled it off, even with coronavirus,” Baron Cohen said. “Democracy was really in danger. I felt that the underbelly that I’d exposed in ‘Borat’ — one of antisemitism, hatred, misogyny — had become overt. Racists were out and proud. We had one who was the president, who was spreading conspiracy theories, hate and lies, all helped by social media. The only thing i could do was pull out the grey suit and do this part again.”
He made one important distinction — saying the suit would be going into a box, never to return again.
