If you have watched Kuch Kuch Hota Hai many times, you’ll remember Nikhil Advani as the guy from The Neelam Show. He began his career being associated with the large scale ornate films of Dharma Productions as well as the realism of Sudhir Mishra by assisting them both in their respective ventures. Quite tender in Bollywood, Advani learnt the demarcations of genres and how to blend them well enough.
After assisting Karan Johar, Nikhil went on to make his independent film under Dharma Productions in 2003. The popular Love saga named Kal Ho Na Ho starring Priety Zinta, Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan was one of the year’s biggest hits with a business of 35 crores in its kitty. The film was the first to introduce the idea of homosexuality in popular cinema as Kantaben assumes that SRK and Saif have a more-than-friends relationship! It was a significant point in popular cinema which paved for bigger films like Dostana which portrayed changing attitudes towards homosexuality in popular media.
Later, Nikhil moved out of the Dharma shadow and made the multi-cast ensemble film Salaam-E-Ishq. With fabulous actors in the cast, the film however failed to spark off magic at the box office with its income summing up to 22.50 crores at the Domestic Box Office. Multi-star cast films with varied stories that failed to tie up well enough, the film’s major flaw was its dwindling loose-ends in the end.
Following this, Nikhil went on to make Chandni Chowk to China with Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone. The film was a dismal low for Advani as its earnings accumulated to a bare sum of 30.31 crores which was a low given the budget of his film. A fractured screenplay and a boring premise did irreparable harm to the film.
Nikhil, who seemed convinced about working with Akshay Kumar, went on to work with him again in Patiala House. Being a high quotient emotional film, its box office lifetime run ended at a measly 32 crore with which the film was a flop! Based loosely on the life of Monty Panesar, the film was almost a biopic that lost itself in melodrama.
Failures refused to deter Nikhil Advani as he went on to direct India’s first 3D animated film Delhi Safari which got immense praises from people mostly for the wonderful animation work and 3D translation done on the film.
Nikhil Advani is already gearing up for up next venture D-Day. Starring first rate actor Irrfan, along with Arjun Rampal, Huma Qureshi and Rishi Kapoor, the film’s premise is thrilling which unravels the lives of undercover agents.
