DC hero Batman has some of the most iconic villains. After Joker, it is now time to explore the origin story of Clayface. The DC film was released in theaters on October 23. The film has a box-office benchmark set by Joker 2 to chase. Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker 2 crashed at the global box office, leaving a modestly budgeted DC villain movie with a chance to surpass its worldwide haul.

While Clayface has registered an opening weekend on the lower side of expectations, it can still salvage itself. The film is likely to gain its audience as the days go by. It is currently enjoying strong word-of-mouth and positive reviews. This could help the film sustain a longer run at the box office.

The film, starring Tom Rhys Harries, debuted at No. 1 in the North American box-office rankings on its opening day, raking in $10.4 million, including $3.5 million from previews. The film was expected to track in the $25-$35 million range during its opening weekend. However, the film’s total was at the lower end of expectations, with a three-day collection of $24 million. Clayface was expected to earn $50 million worldwide in its opening weekend. However, it ended up with $43 million in its debut weekend.

In comparison to Joker 2, one of Batman’s most popular villain films, Clayface earned 35% less. Released in 2024, Joker 2 was a theatrical flop despite having a strong start at the box office. The film had a strong opening of $20 million but declined from Day 2 onward. It earned $37.67 million during its opening weekend. This represents a 36.29% drop in collections compared with Joker 2.

According to Box Office Mojo, Joker 2 collected just $207.5 million worldwide in its lifetime. It seems like a big target for the latest DCU movie, but with a strong hold and steady run, Clayface can beat the Joaquin Phoenix-starrer sequel. It will be a notable achievement for the Tom Rhys Harries-starrer horror movie. Since word of mouth is strong, it has a shot at outperforming Joker 2. With that production cost, it will easily be profitable at the box office.
