A trivia specialist had once told me that Govinda held an unusual record in Limca Book of Records, for having signed nearly 65 films together. While Kal Penn recently joked to us about how doing more than one project a time is illegal in Hollywood, this is exactly how Bollywood used to roll in the 90s.
Govinda thinks it was a different era, a different time. Commenting about the younger actors he said, “Yeh toh kaam mein bhookh rakhne wale bachche hain. Humein toh bas kaam paane ki bhookh thi.” His eccentric, lovable and absolutely crazy fan boy co-star in Kill Dil understands the gravity of the change. He notes, “Films in his times were made differently. The whole gamut of media was different. Television was not that big, fewer films were being made, internet was obsolete. It was a very different time and the way of working was about quantity. Now, the number of films matter a lot less, it is about delivering top quality. If you are not putting out films, they will be made anyway. I think it is more a function of how things have changed. I started 3 and half years ago, the way it is changing every four months there is a new change. Movie marketing, movie making is different. Instagram has an impact on movie marketing. Digital technology affects us. That changes how films are made.”
Ranveer has had the opportunity of working with two superheroes of Bollywood from the 90s. Anil Kapoor, with whom he shot a elaborate schedule for Dil Dhadakne Do, too realizes the stark change since then. Ranveer continues, “It is a very exciting time to be a part of the industry. The guys who have worked in 90s, now they are very interested with the change and have a much broader view. I have worked with Anil Kapoor, Govinda, they agree this is nothing like it ever was before. The audience is also accepting the non-traditional films. The landmark year was the year I debuted when a Band Baaja Baarat and Love Sex Aur Dhoka too found success despite being unusual films. It’s getting better and better.”
Ranveer has been instrumental in bringing to the arena many such left of center films. It’s amazing how he slips in brilliantly from a subtle Lootera to an overpowering Ramleela but in the end, the beauty of this performer lies in his spontaneity at expressing himself so wholeheartedly that strikes. His film Kill Dil is all set to release this Friday and has the look of a crisp commercial entertainer.
