The 70s saw the rise of one of the biggest superstars in this country. When Amitabh Bachchan was born, it was just a matter of a few years ago, and he rose to the top as the Angry Young Man of Bollywood. But then came a time when he hit rock bottom, and it was none other than Raj Kapoor who cheered him up at a Holi Party.

The showman was famous for his Holi parties in Bollywood. At one such party, he noticed a disheartened Big B standing aloof. While everyone was too busy enjoying the Holi festivities, none noticed how distressed the Deewar actor was.

It was a time when Amitabh Bachchan was experiencing a low in his career with continuous flops. As many as 10. He was not in the mood to gel and celebrate, but Raj Kapoor pumped courage into him yet again.

He encouraged Amitabh Bachchan to entertain the party with some acts. Since industry stalwarts were present in one place, it could work in his favor. Initially, Big B was hesitant, but Raj Kapoor’s insistence made him try to play on the idea.

In some time, the entire Holi party at Raj Kapoor’s Bungalow was enjoying Amitabh Bachchan singing a folk song, Rang Barse Bheege Chunar Wali, which was written by his poet father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan. This turned into a mock audition for the guests at the Holi Party.

Everyone was mesmerized by Big B’s naive yet brilliant attempt at singing, and very soon, Yash Chopra decided to use the same song for his film Silsila. The lyrics of the song were changed, but the idea of making it an Amitabh Bachchan song was kept intact. He sang the song in the mood that was required, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Rang Barse currently has around 146 million views on Yash Raj Films’ official youtube channel, with an added 4.6 million views on Sa Re Ga Ma’s Youtube Channel.

Rang Barse has been composed by Shiv Kumar Sharma and Hari Prasad Chaurasia. The tune of the song was taken by a Rajasthani-Haryanvi folk song by Meerabai.
